Pen Pals

Please send in signed permission forms for the pen pal program by tomorrow as we are going to start writing to our pen pals. Thank you!

Pen Pals in Germany

Hello all 104 families,

One of my former colleagues, Ms. Alexander, is currently teaching English to college students in Germany. We are going to start a pen pal program in which students exchange letters with the German students and skype as a whole class. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about the culture and customs of another country, and it gives them an authentic reason for improving their writing. In addition, the students will be teaching the German students about Chicago and about English.
Ms. Alexander has created a presentation for our class, which you may view on our class blog: room104reading.blogspot.com.

I will review all letters as they are emailed to me first, and I will also review all letters that we send to the other school. No personal information will be shared other than the student’s first name.

Please check one below:

________ Yes, I give my child permission to participate fully in the pen pal program.

________ No, I would not like my child to participate. Students that do not participate will work on grammar.

Thank you for your time. Please send back all forms by Tuesday, January 22.

Thank you to all parents and families that attended the open house tonight! We enjoyed seeing all of you there and we are looking forward to working with you.

Quick notes for 8th grade:

Please be sure to get an information sheet about service hours. All service hour sheets must be turned in to Ms. Chaps.

Homework Policy:

All assignments must be turned in the day that they are due.

For assignments that are 1 day late, 10% of the total points will be deducted.

After this 1 day grace period, the assignment will not be accepted, and it will be counted as incomplete.

*If your child wants extra help, they may come before or after school to speak with me. I am here every day by 7:30, and I can stay after when necessary.

*A note from a parent about emergency circumstances will allow the child 1 more day to complete the assignment.

Here is a picture of our classroom! We are looking forward to seeing all of you on Tuesday :)

Next, we have our vocabulary wall that is sectioned off by the novel that each group is reading. Vocabulary words will be updated each week, and there is a vocabulary quiz each Friday. This quarter we will be reading The Hunger Games, Frankenstein, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, and Monster.
